Scientometrics Spring School
Hangzhou, China; April 2019
The Scientometrics School is a week-long workshop for doctoral students hosted by the Centre for Science and Technology (CWTS) of Leiden University (Netherlands). It is held in cities around the world to promote international collaboration. In 2019, I attended the workshop at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and was the only American student. In the program, students begin by learning about the historical background of scientometrics and the sociology of science, and progress through selecting data sources, analyzing citation networks, and finally ending the program with future directions and the opportunity to share ideas for research projects. In addition to the intensive curriculum, students are afforded networking opportunities with other students and leaders in the field. In my experience, I learned how to mine datasets from Web of Science, analyze citation networks, and create visualizations using VOSViewer, CitNetExplorer, and Python. I met and attended classes from leading scientometrics researchers, Vincent Traag, Ludo Waltman, Nees Jan van Eck, Cassidy Sugimoto, and Vincent Larivière. Additionally, I collaborated and networked with students and post-docs from Chinese universities and Elsevier.
